Knut uses his ski skills on the big screen and I wonder about basic survival
I´m really proud to share with you guys that my youngest brother, Knut, is playing a stuntman as a kick ass Telemark skier on old, wooden skis in Norway’s most popular TV show at the moment, “The Heavy Water War” - stopping Hitler’s atomic bomb. It’s a 6 series movie that’s very well made and the rights to showing it are already sold to many countries!
The movie is so well made and has some spine-tingling scenes that I almost can’t watch! But there was one scene that opened my eyes and left a bigger impression on me than even my own brother, or the explosions at the factory…It was a mountain scene where the Norwegian men fighting against the Germans had to wait much longer in the woods than what their supplies offered them. They even boiled and ate moss at one point, and that’s when it hit me… What if we had to survive in nature for a couple of weeks or longer for some reason? How many would really have made it? How many know basic survival skills?
My other brother, Ole Gunnar, learned about this a lot in the military. We were all so keen on learning when he came come, but then the excitement kind of faded away. Now, I feel that urge coming back. I mean, I know quite a lot of things, but to repeat and renew knowledge as well as learning more would be very interesting because simple bits of knowledge can save your life. For instance, did you know that if you are stuck like that for a long time, your intestines will not be able to use the nutrition of pure bark? But a boiled soup from evergreen branches is very nutritious and able to be digested easily.
I think I´ll start a little column here on the blog called “survival in nature,” that will be us testing and doing simple things. Would you like to learn some of that? I mean, not doomsday-ish at all, but basic knowledge?
